“SHOPPING WHILE BLACK”: DEPARTMENT STORE HIT BY TWO RACIAL PROFILING COMPLAINTS FROM CUSTOMERS


Montreal, October 21, 2011 --- Two English-speaking Black Montrealers have mandated CRARR to file civil rights complaints against a major department store after both were rudely intercepted in two different cases involving different branches, and required to produce proofs of purchase right after they paid at the cash and being suspected of theft.

Montreal, October 21, 2011---A young Black lawyer who was stopped earlier this year by the Police on his way home in Laval, a municipality north of Montreal, will file an Application to the Police Ethics Committee for review of the Police Ethics Commissioner's decision.

CASE OF RACIALLY PROFILED BLACK LASALLE TEACHER HEADS TO POLICE ETHICS TRIBUNAL


Montreal, October 3, 2011---The case of Mr. Farid Charles, a 27-year old Black high school teacher who last year was violently yanked from a friend’s car by two Montreal Police officers, arrested and then fined, will be brought by the Police Ethics Commissioner before the Police Ethics Committee.

UNIVERSITY DISCRIMINATED AGAINST ARAB SECURITY GUARD IN EMPLOYMENT: HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

Montreal, October 14, 2011 --- With CRARR's help, a security guard of Moroccan ancestry has won his case before the Quebec Human Rights and Youth Rights Commission, after his application for a security guard position with a Montreal university was rejected in 2005 because the head of security at the time did not want Arabs or minorities working in that service.

Montreal, September 9, 2011 --- A Muslim educator has mandated CRARR to file a complaint against La Ronde for racial profiling after the amusement park accused her of fraud, detained and interrogated her for more than one hour and then, before completing its investigation, banned her for one year.

POLICE ETHICS COMMITTEE DECISION WRONG ON RACIAL PROFILING, APPEALED BY ARAB WOMAN IN SUPERIOR COURT


Montreal, September 20, 2011 --- Amal Asmar, the Arab Concordia University graduate who was violently arrested and fined by two Montreal Police officers in Winter 2010, has filed for judicial review of the Police Ethics Committee decision that rejects her racial profiling claim due to what she considers to be erroneous application of the law.

The case will provide a rare opportunity for Quebec courts to address racial profiling and discrimination in police practices.

Montreal, August 29, 2011 --- Two Montrealers of Indian origin have been the target of investigation and subsequent ”periodic checking” by the Quebec Health Insurance Board (Régie de l'assurance-maladie du Québec, or RAMQ) for possible fraud simply because their names somehow landed on a list of an immigration consultant involved in a major scheme to defraud medicare.

Montreal, August 23, 2011 --- A major Canadian bank and an external recruiting agency are cited in two complaints of race-based discrimination against a Black Canadian woman, for having required her to submit a certificate of good conduct from the police as a condition of approval of her hiring, despite the knowledge that she could not obtain such a document while facing criminal charges.
