“SHOPPING WHILE BLACK”: DEPARTMENT STORE HIT BY TWO RACIAL PROFILING COMPLAINTS FROM CUSTOMERS

Montreal, October 21, 2011 --- Two English-speaking Black Montrealers have mandated CRARR to file civil rights complaints against a major department store after both were rudely intercepted in two different cases involving different branches, and required to produce proofs of purchase right after they paid at the cash and being suspected of theft.

In one case involving a woman in her 70s, the security guards and threatened to call the police on her were called while she was searching for her receipt in her bags.

The same department store was involved in another incident involving a racialized customer, who was suspected of theft and who, during the detention by the store security guard, was required to disclosed his birth date, place of birth and social security number.

More information to come.
