THE CITY OF LONGUEUIL WILL RE-TRY THE DEBELLEFEUILLE CASE

Montreal, November 30, 2011 --- As a result of the Superior Court on November 17 to quash the guilty verdict for Joel Debellefeuille, a Black man who was intercepted in his BMW by the police in 2009 because of his “Québécois family name” and to send the case back to the Municipal Court for a re-trial, the City of Longueuil has decided to go ahead with another attempt to prosecute Mr. Debellfeuille for a highway traffic offense.

The decision by the City of Longueuil to prosecute Joel Debellefeuille, a Black business manager, in what is clearly a racial profiling incident, inevitably makes the compelling case for corrective legislative and judicial actions to address race-based prosecutorial discrimination and other forms of systemic racism in the Québec justice sytem.

SUPERIOR COURT ORDERED NEW TRIAL FOR BLACK MAN ARRESTED IN A DRIVING WHILE BLACK CASE IN LAVAL


Montreal, November 16, 2011 --- Earlier this week, the Superior Court of Quebec ordered a new trial for a Laval Black man who was tailed by the police on his way home, intercepted, arrested in front of his home and then fined, in what is considered as a “Driving While Black” case in that city.

THREE POLICE ETHICS COMMISSIONER'S DECISIONS ON RACIAL PROFILING FILED FOR REVIEW IN ONE MONTH
