BANNING HIP HOP AND RAP IN LIQUOR LICENSING: A SWEEPING ATTACK ON FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION AND BLACK CULTURE


Montreal, April 3, 2012 --- By requiring Montreal bars and clubs to stop playing hip hop and rap music, the Quebec liquor licensing board has achieved something which many authorities in the United States have tried but failed : ban a musical style closely associated with the Black community, institutionalize racial profiling and curtail freedom of expression.

Montreal, April 2, 2012 --- Joel Debellefeuille, the black South Shore BMW owner and driver who was stopped in 2009 by a Longueuil police officer for his French name, has once again been stopped by the Longueuil police while driving to his son’s daycare center two weeks ago.

Montreal, February 7, 2012--- In a decision rendered last month, the Police Ethics Committee has imposed sanctions on two Ville de Montréal police officers for issuing penal charges against brothers Stevens and Danny Laincy without justification; however, it did not consider the case to be one involving racial profiling.
