MAJOR MONTREAL BLACK DEMOCRAPHICS STUDY TO BE RELEASED ON MARCH 18

Montreal, March 4, 2010 --- A new demographic study of the Montreal Black community will be released by the Montreal Consortium for Human Rights and Advocacy Training (MCHRAT) on March 18, 2010, at 9:00 am, at the McGill University Faculty Club, located at 3450 McTavish (north of Sherbrooke West), Montreal.

Funded by the Multiculturalism Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage (now moved to Citizenship and Immigration Canada), the study analyzes the 2006 Census and provides a groundbreaking comprehensive socio-economic data of different Black communities of Montreal. Dr. Jim Torczyner of the McGill School of Social Work and Director of MCHRAT, heads the research team that conducted the study over the last two years.

The March 18 day-long activity includes a presentation of data analyses and discussions on specific themes of employment, education, criminal justice, home ownership, immigration and the role of faith institutions. Simultaneous translation will be available. CRARR is associated with the study by contributing a review of policy developments between 1998 and 2008 that affects Black Montrealers in the areas of employment and criminal justice.

Due to very limited space, interested persons wishing to attend are requested to register in advance by March 12. Info: black.demographic@mcgill.ca, or (514) 392-2142
