SYSTEMIC RACISM: THE WORD BOOKSTORE TO DONATE ANTI-RACISM BOOK PROFITS TO CRARR

Montreal, July 15, 2020 — In a display of solidarity, The Word Bookstore, an independent, family-run bookstore founded in 1975, has launched a fundraising campaign in support of the Black Lives Matter movement in which all profits from the sale of particular books are to be donated to CRARR.

In the wake of George Floyd’s tragic death which sparked an international movement, The Word Bookstore, located on the historic Milton Street near McGill University, reached out to CRARR with the goal of meaningfully contributing to local organizations that engage in advocacy work in support of local Black communities’ civil rights.

To that end, the Word Bookstore will be generously donating all profits from the sale of “Policing Black Lives” by Robyn Maynard, “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo, and “How to be an Antiracist” by Ibram X. Kendi, to CRARR.

“We are really proud to support an organization like CRARR, which we know has been doing important anti-racism work on the ground for three decades,” said The Word Bookstore manager Brendan King- Edwards. “At a time when some politicians in Quebec still refuse to recognize systemic racism, CRARR is helping push the true narrative forward, and we want to be a small part of that,” he continued.

CRARR is deeply grateful to The Word Bookstore for its support, and encourages people of all backgrounds interested in expanding their awareness of racism issues to join in the fundraising campaign by visiting The Word Bookstore and making a purchase either online or in person.

“Small independently owned bookstores like The Word Bookstore are an essential feature of Montreal’s cultural landscape, and play a deeply important role in raising public awareness around anti-racism,” said CRARR Executive Fo Niemi. “In the name of those whom we help, we extend our most sincere thanks to The Word Bookstore for its kind support of CRARR,” he concluded.

CRARR will use the proceeds to continue to fight for the civil rights of racialized and marginalized Montrealers, and to combat systemic racism and discrimination at all levels.
