CRARR TO LAUNCH PETITION CAMPAIGN TO HOLD PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON SYSTEMIC RACISM AND DISCRIMINATION IN MONTREAL

Montreal, February 9, 2018 — Many community organizations and leaders will lend their voice at an event to be held this Sunday to the Initiative launched by former municipal election candidate Balarama Holness to compel the City of Montreal to hold a public consultation to develop a strategy against systemic racism and discrimination in Montreal.

The event will also serve to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day (February 11), which was officially recognized by Law 493 (adopted by the Quebec National Assembly in 2015).

Numerous speakers representing Montreal's diversity will address issues ranging from minority underrepresentation in the City’s workforce and boards and hate crimes, to racial profiling, poverty, and lack of fair access to housing, including Councillor Marvin Rotrand, the Dean of Montreal City Council. Many victims of racism will also be on hand to speak on their own experiences.

More information to come.
