CRARR JOINS CONCORDIA STUDENT UNION IN MARKING THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE JAN. 29 MOSQUE KILLING



Montreal, January 27, 2018 — CRARR will join the Concordia Student Union (CSU) at a commemoration ceremony to mark the first anniversary of the Islamophobic killing at the Islamic Cultural Center in Quebec City. The event will be held on Monday, January 29, 2018, at 6:00 pm, at Concordia University's downtown campus, 1455 De Maisonneuve West, 7th floor, Montreal.

The interfaith and intergenerational event will be hosted by the CSU. Omar Riaz, CSU General Coordinator; Ahmed Badr, CSU External Affairs Coordinator, and Asma Mushtaq, CSU Academic and Advocacy Coordinator, will join Connor Spencer, Vice-President of the Student Union of McGill University (SSMU) and a representative of the Association for the Voice of Education of Quebec (AVEQ), in welcoming the following faith and spiritual leaders at the commemoration:

• Imam Salam Elmenyawi
• Rabbi Ellen Greenspan, Temple Emanu -El-Beth Sholom
• Ellie Hummel, Chaplain & Coordinator of Interfaith and Spirituality Center of Concordia
• Rev. Rosemary Lambie, Union United Church, and
• Manjit Singh, Former Director, Office of Chaplaincy Services, McGill University.

Other special guests of the evening include:
• Marc Miller, MP (Ville-Marie—Le Sud-Ouest—Île-des-Sœurs)
• Cathy Wong, President of the Municipal Council of Montreal and City Councillor (Peter McGill)
• Samer Mazjoub, President of the Canadian Muslim Forum, and
• Sameer Zuberi, Representative of the Canadian Muslim Lawyers Association.

A candle-lighting ceremony will be held in the memory of the six men who were gunned down by hate: Ibrahima Barry (aged 39), Mamadou Tanou Barry (aged 42), Khaled Belkacemi (aged 60), Aboubaker Thabti (aged 44), Abdelkrim Hassane (aged 41) and Azzedine Soufiane (aged 57).

The CSU invites all members of the Concordia University and their friends and families and the Montreal community at large, to join in this commemoration and to stand together in support of the victims of the unprecedented act of Islamophobic violence in Canadian and Quebec History, and of stronger actions by government and civil society against hate crimes and extremist groups, and in favor of solidarity, security, equality and freedom.
