ARAB EMPLOYEE FILES COMPLAINT AGAINST ENGLISH MONTREAL SCHOOL BOARD FOR JOB DISCRIMINATOIN

Montreal, August 2, 2016 — The Quebec Human Rights and Youth Rights Commission has accepted a complaint filed by CRARR on behalf of an Arab employee of the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) who was denied a job interview for a supervisory position despite possessing the basic qualifications.

In the complaint, CRARR and the employee, who has previously taken legal action against the EMSB for harassment on the job and discrimination in employment, are asking the Commission to conduct an investigation into barriers of direct and systemic racism in employment at the School Board, which may explain the low representation of racialized individuals in supervisory and managerial positions.

The employee declined mediation last week as CRARR requested the investigation into the complaint.
