5% LIMIT ON BLACK HAIR PRODUCTS: BLACK WOMAN'S CASE AGAINST WEST ISLAND MALL TO HEAD TO HUMAN RIGHTS TRIBUNAL

Montreal, March 25, 2015 — The Quebec Human Rights and Youth Rights Commission has ruled that there is sufficient evidence of race discrimination in a case involving an English-speaking Black kiosk owner whose lease was terminated by the Galeries Des Sources in 2011 because she failed to comply with the landlord's condition not to carry more than 5% of Black hair products among the merchandise sold at her kiosk.

The case can now head to the Quebec Human Rights Tribunal.

CRARR assisted the kiosk owner in two complaints filed in 2012 with the Commission. The termination of the lease resulted in significant financial loss for the woman, and the exclusion of her customers, mostly Black women, from the mall.

More information to come.
