CRARR TO APPEAR AT CITY'S CONSULTATION ON RACIAL PROFILING TOMORROW


Montréal, June 20, 2017 — CRARR will participate in the public consultation tomorrow at Montreal's City Hall to present its observations on the City's assessment of its performance on racial and social profiling.

CRARR is scheduled to present its comments at 3.00 pm, at City Hall, located at 275 Notre Dame East, Montreal.

CITY DROPPED CASE AGAINST LONGUEUIL BLACK MAN OVER 2015 TRAFFIC FINE IN A DRIVING WHILE BLACK CASE


Montréal, June 6, 2017 — After five court appearances in the last 20 months to fight a ticket he received from two local police officers in what is considered to be a Driving While Black/racial profiling incident, a Longueuil Black resident can now feel relieved.

Yesterday, the city prosecutor dropped the case due to delays.

Montreal, May 29, 2017 — The Quebec Superior Court’s decision authorizing a class action lawsuit filed by a group of disability rights advocates to proceed is a giant step forward for civil rights in Quebec that will benefit not only people with disabilities, but all members of discriminated groups, including Indigenous people, women and people of color.

Montreal, April 11, 2017 — The Quebec Human Rights and Youth Rights Commission’s highly disturbing decision, which dismissed a number of complaints of discrimination in public transit filed by disabled riders, has created a negative precedent for the fight against systemic discrimination and in favor of reasonable accommodation in Quebec.

This was CRARR’s position at a press conference held today by RAPLIQ, a disabled rights advocacy group.

Montréal, 14 avril 2017 — Les trois premiers mois de 2017 ont vu un accroissement inhabituel du nombre de demandes d’assistance reçues par le CRARR de la part de victimes de discrimination basée sur la race et d’autres motifs de discrimination.

Trente neuf (39) des quarante six (46) nouvelles demandes d’assistance et d’intervention auprès des services du CRARR concernent trois secteurs principalement : l’emploi, la sécurité publique, et l’éducation.

UNUSUAL HIGH NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS RECEIVED IN FIRST QUARTER OF 2017


Montreal, April 14, 2017 — The first three months of 2017 saw an unusually number of requests for assistance from victims of discrimination based on race and other prohibited grounds.

Thirty nine (39) of the 46 new requests for CRARR’s assistance involve three main sectors: employment and labor; law enforcement, and education.

RACIAL PROFILING: SIX POLICE CARS SURROUNDED YOUNG BLACK MAN FOR DANCING NEXT TO HIS PARKED CAR


Montréal, March 19, 2017 — A young Black man was intercepted by the police for dancing next to his parked car, in front of his white girlfriend's home in Côte-des-Neiges. Surrounded by six police cars, he eventually received a $48 ticket for “being a pedestrian and standing on the roadway to deal with the occupant of a vehicle.”
